Self Defense

Taking a self-defense course is our response to fear, helplessness, and the sense of powerlessness caused by the pervasive violence that surrounds us all. A variety of classes have been designed to educate people on the philosophy behind self-defense, through physical techniques such as, combinations and floor work using releases, strikes and kicks.

Classes are not intended as a guarantee to personal safety. They are, however, designed to give students the basics, and to remind us that self-defense is 80% prevention (awareness, assertiveness, and attitude)... not just physical intervention.

With the appropriate skills, students generally can avoid potentially dangerous situations and if necessary respond to a physically threatening incident with a clear-headed plan of action.

If you or someone you know can benefit from taking a personal safety class, be assertive and take action. The Women’s Center is offering free personal safety classes to women and teenage girls. Classes are taught by certified instructors and can be arranged for schools, businesses, or other local community organizations.
