Personal Safety

Working to end sexual violence is the responsibility of all of us. Society plays a vital role in this endeavor. Everyone can help by taking a hard and painful look at the attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate sexual violence, and then assess how these behaviors and attitudes support rape and/or child sexual abuse. The Women’s Center of San Joaquin County offers a comprehensive prevention education program which strives to empower children and adults by teaching them to recognize potentially harmful situations and what skills to use for self-protection.

Our program provides:

• Information and training are provided for school staff. This includes an overview of the classroom presentations, indicators and dynamics of child abuse, how to respond to a child who discloses abuse and the process of reporting child abuse.
• Children participate in a series of prevention awareness discussions where they learn to differentiate between safe, healthy touches and touches that are exploitive or abusive.
• Through the discussions, role plays, and a video, children learn and practice skills to enable them to handle difficult situations. In addition, children learn how and whom they can report the abuse to.
• Following the classroom presentations, certified peer counselors are available for one on one follow-up with children who want to ask questions or talk over a problem. If child abuse is identified, appropriate action will be taken to see that the child is protected.

• What are examples of unsafe touches?
• When is it wrong to keep a secret?
• What does it mean to be assertive?
• Who can you tell if someone wants you to keep a secret?

Do we Need a Program Like This?

Yes! Child sexual abuse rises annually in San Joaquin County. Prevention Education empowers children to act on their own behalf. Informed children are better able to resist attempted abuse and are more likely to seek help.
