Women’s Center Collecting Shoes for Walk A Mile in Her Shoes® Men’s March

STOCKTON – On April 12, 2008, the Women’s Center of San Joaquin County will be hosting its first Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Men’s March at Sherwood Mall. Men from all walks of life will complete a mile-long course in women’s pumps to protest rape, sexual assault and gender violence.

In preparation for the event, the Women’s Center is seeking donations of new and gently used women’s pumps, sizes 11 and up, in all colors, shapes, and styles. Drop boxes for shoes will be at the following locations: Financial Center Union (all locations); Senator Michael Machado’s office at 31 E. Channel Street, 4th Floor, Stockton; and Congressman Jerry McNerney’s Office at 2222 Grand Canal Boulevard, Suite #7, Stockton. Shoes can also be dropped of at any of the Women’s Center’s offices – Stockton (620 N. San Joaquin St.), Lodi (29 S. Washington St.), or Tracy (35 E. 10th St., Suite A).

The purpose of the march is to encourage more men to speak out against rape and sexual assault and to increase the community’s understanding about the effects of sexual violence on victim’s lives – by walking a mile in their shoes. Proceeds from this event will help to support the Women’s Center’s sexual assault services.

The mission of the Women’s Center of San Joaquin County is to provide a wide range of supportive, educational, and crisis intervention services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, enabling them to regain control of their lives. For the past three decades, the Women’s Center has been serving women, children and men throughout San Joaquin County. The agency now reaches over 24,000 individuals each year.

The Center hopes that this fundraiser will raise awareness about the prevalence of sexual assault, educate the community about what we all can do to prevent it, and inform people about the agency’s services available to those who have already been victimized.
